An unthinkable act of violence jolted Midtown Manhattan on Monday night after a 27-year-old man killed four people and injured multiple others with a gun in a high-rise at 345 Park Avenue before committing suicide.

Tamura, a Nevada resident who has a history of mental health issues, is accused of driving to New York City from Las Vegas before carrying out his deadly assault, authorities said. Tamura entered the building with an M4 rifle, opened fire in the lobby and then went to the 33rd floor, where he shot more before eventually shooting and killing himself, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters.

They included NYPD security officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was killed in a lobby shooting. The other three victims — two women and one man — had not yet been publicly identified. One other man is hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Four others were injured when they tried to flee the mayhem.

Tamura’s car, a black BMW registered in Nevada, was double-parked outside the building, police said. They also found guns, ammunition and prescription medication inside. It’s still not clear why Tamura set his sights on this location where tenants include the NFL, Blackstone and KPMG.

The N.F.L. said in a statement that one of its employees was among those who had been seriously wounded. League Commissioner Roger Goodell called it “an unspeakable act of violence” and said the league is focusing on support for the victim and the victim’s family.

Tamura’s past has come as a shock to friends and former coaches. He attended Granada Hills Charter School in Los Angeles and was described as a quiet, well-mannered player on the football team. His former teammates said they remembered Ms. Carroll as a person who “never exerted bad energy” and who led by example on the field. His coach, Walter Roby, called him “coachable” and “elusive” while reacting in shock to the tragic news.

While Tamura had recently reconnected with a few old friends on social media and worked at a Las Vegas casino, there was no indication publicly that he might commit such a violent act.

But haunting one of two questions: Why did Shane Devon Tamura drive all the way across the country to wreak havoc in a Manhattan office building?

Police say the investigation remains active.
