Rogers Communications has kicked off a groundbreaking satellite-to-mobile text messaging trial, aiming to keep Canadians connected—even in the most remote areas. Teaming up with SpaceX’s Starlink and Lynk Global, Rogers is testing a service that allows users to send and receive texts using low-earth orbit satellites when there is no regular cell coverage.
The Rogers Satellite Text service is currently in free beta until October, offering coverage across Canada, including rural highways and isolated regions. The trial also includes text-to-911 support, making it a vital safety tool.
“This is the next big leap in wireless connectivity,” said Rogers CEO Tony Staffieri. The technology uses Rogers’ existing wireless spectrum alongside Starlink’s satellite network to automatically connect smartphones without the need for special apps or settings.
Once the beta ends, the satellite texting service will be included at no extra cost for Rogers Ultimate plan users, or available to others for $15/month. Beta participants will also receive $5 off their monthly bill for a year. The move is all part of the company’s big push to bring reliable connectivity to every corner of Canada – regardless of geographic isolation.
