Ford Recalling More Than 100,000 Vehicles in Canada Over Fuel Pump Issue

In a wide-ranging safety action, Ford is recalling more than 107,000 vehicles in Canada over worries that a bad fuel pump could cause the engine to die — juggernaut rolling disasters waiting to happen, especially in high temperatures or with a low fuel tank.

The problem, which is also affecting close to 850,000 vehicles in the United States, concerns a possible failure of the low-pressure fuel pump. The problem, according to Transport Canada, would be that the engines could stall during driving, which is a potentially dangerous situation for both the vehicle occupants and other motorists.

Ford said it will start informing affected Canadian owners as of Monday. The vehicle manufacturer has not yet issued a repair for the defect. Once a fix is developed, owners will be asked to take their vehicles to a Ford dealership for a free repair.

Which cars in Canada are affected?

The Canadian recall applies to a varied selection of Ford and Lincoln models, mostly for the 2021 to 2023 model years:

•              Ford Bronco (2021–2022)

•              Ford Expedition (2022)

•              Ford Explorer (2021–2022)

•              Ford F-150 (2021–2022)

•              Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550 (2021–2023)

•              Ford Mustang (2021–2022)

•              Ford Police Interceptor Utility (2021–2022)

•              Lincoln Navigator (2021–2022)

•              Lincoln Aviator (2021–2023)

About 10% of potentially affected vehicles in the United States may have the defective part, according to Ford. No accidents or injuries have been reported, but the automaker is calling on drivers to stay attuned to warning symptoms.

What Are the Warning Signs?

Drivers may notice the following signs before a fuel pump fails:

•              Poor engine performance

•              Reduced engine power

•              The glow of the check engine light

•              Sudden engine stalls

The mechanical failure seems to be caused by an internal contamination of the jet pump, component of the fuel system from the vehicle. Ford says the issue is more likely to arise in hot weather and when the gas tank is at a quarter full or less — a scenario a lot of Canadian drivers might find themselves in this summer.

What Happens Next?

Ford will issue two separate notices to owners:

•              First Safety Notification – Letting them know they have a problem.

•              Service Notification – Issued when the repair remedy is available; customers are instructed to schedule the free repair at a certified dealer.

Ford has recognized supplier-level changes that have likely led to the faulty fuel pumps during vehicle production, and the company has yet to confirm a timeline for the remedy.

How Can Owners Find Out if Their Vehicle is Included in the Recalls?

Ford customers in Canada can head to either the Transport Canada Recalls Database, or Ford’s official website to search with their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if their vehicle is involved in this recall as well.

Or you can call your local Ford dealer for assistance.

Why Canadians Should Care About This.

Stalling engines while on the highway or in the intersection can be risky. If your car is on the list, it is a smart idea to keep the fuel tank at least half full and watch out for any signs of trouble until you get it repaired.

This latest action is part of a series of recalls and investigations by Ford in North America, as the automaker is also facing a separate probe into 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks over faulty gear shifters.

Bottom Line:

If you drive a newer Ford or Lincoln, especially a sport utility vehicle or truck from the 2021–2023 model years, pay attention to this recall notice. Stay on the lookout in your mailbox and your email inbox, and be ready to walk into your dealership when contacted — it will not cost you a penny, but it could very well save your motor… Or life.
